As part of Avnet’s ongoing partnership with the Arizona Diamondbacks, Avnet Cares is a sponsor of “Read Your Way to the Ballpark.” The program encourages reading and literacy among students in grades K-6. Students earn prizes through reading goals, culminating with a ticket voucher as the final prize. Teachers are able to sign up for the program for free.
The program kicked off in the middle of August with a school visit to Lowell Elementary School in Phoenix. Students were surprised with an appearance of Dbacks catcher Jose Herrera, along with fan favorite Baxter! The group, which included a representative from Avnet Cares, was able to award a $1,000 grant to one of the classrooms for new books. The students were excited to learn about the program – many of the kids live within blocks of Chase Field but have never been to a game.
The Avnet Cares team continued their support of the program by meeting at Chase Field to assemble kits for the teachers, which included all of the prizes for the program. Avnet Cares volunteers will also help out at the home baseball games over Labor Day weekend, distributing kits to the teachers who registered.
Space for the program is limited to the first 300 teachers who register, click here to learn more about the program.
