Lite-On is a renowned brand specialising in the narrow field of optoelectronics. Its extensive product range includes a variety of semiconductor light sources as well as a selection of optocouplers. For years now, they have been available directly from the TME warehouses.
The Lite-On product range can be unreservedly recommended to all our customers, i.e. electronic equipment manufacturers, individual creators of automation system solutions, engineers involved in prototyping or even ardent hobbyists. Describing this manufacturer’s full offer is quite a challenging task, as it includes hundreds of different items. Therefore, this is only a general overview of the Lite-On solutions, among which we outline both the popular and less typical product groups. Due to the generally high interest in optoelectronic component applications, this product range is definitely worth your attention.

LEDs
LEDs are obviously the flagship product offered by Lite-On. The company specialises in manufacturing all popular types of these components – from well-known round LEDs designed for through-hole mounting (THT) to state-of-the-art structures integrated with programmable control systems. Lite-On also provides components emitting light from outside the visible spectrum, a solution widely used in the field of communication as well as in sensors or photochemical processes.

Standard LEDs
Firstly, it must be noted that, apart from the specific solutions presented below, Lite-On also manufactures “classic” LEDs, i.e. signaling elements commonly used as indicators. This product range comprises a diverse selection of shapes (round, oval, rectangular), sizes and colours. The TME customers can also select from among components with a wide beam angle (good visibility) or ones in which the light is focused in a tight beam. Obviously, they are available both in “classic” THT packages and standardised SMD formats. This product group also features models demonstrating more specific and complex functionalities. They include, for example, multi-coloured models, i.e. not only red-green or typical RGB components, but also programmable and addressable LEDs, in which 3-colour light-emitting structures are combined with a digital control system. Thanks to such a design, the diodes only require a power supply module and data transmission line to send instructions concerning light colour and brightness. Each LED can operate individually, but they can also be programmed in series.

White LEDs with colour temperature from 2400 K (warm) to 6500 K (cold) are another solution that is available in this section of the TME product catalogue. These are surface-mounted diodes with power rating even up to 808 mW. They are typically installed in groups, as is the case with incandescent lamps or LED strips.

UV diodes
Characteristic UV-resistant enclosure.
There are other two groups of light-emitting diodes provided by Lite-On that are also worth mentioning. The former includes LEDs emitting ultraviolet (UV) light. It is mostly invisible to the human eye (due to biological limitations), but used in numerous applications such as checking the security features of banknotes, curing resins and adhesives in photochemical processes, and also disinfection (components emitting UV-C light, i.e. the highest ultraviolet radiation band frequency). In general, this type of Lite-On diodes can generate light with the wavelength ranging from 265 nm to 415 nm (depending on the model), with light output power up to 975 mW. Their specifications cover the majority of typical applications and, due to such factors as high efficiency, manufacture quality and encapsulation in standardised enclosures, these components can be successfully used in mass-production processes. Note also that UV light is a part of natural sunlight and plays a certain role in photosynthesis and other processes, so UV-A lighting systems can be used to provide artificial illumination for some plant species.

IR diodes
Infra-red light emitting diodes, with the wavelength that is too long to be noticed by the human eye, are another group of specific LEDs. For example, they are typically used in remote controls for radio and TV equipment. However, IR ( Infrared) emitters ensure wireless communication in numerous diverse fields, e.g. industrial applications or remote-controlled thermal energy meters. IR LEDs are also used to illuminate spaces supervised by night-vision cameras and create various types of detectors and light barriers.

Optocouplers
Optocouplers are one of the flagship product groups provided by Lite-On. There are various types of optocouplers available: with analogue or digital outputs, and also optotriacs. They are available in surface-mounted and through-hole mount designs, in versions adjusted to various applications.
Optocouplers are enclosed in typical housings for integrated circuits.
Components with analogue outputs are based on phototransistors to facilitate the adjustment of current flow in one circuit with a signal transmitted by another, isolated circuit. This solution is particularly significant when it comes to controlling electromechanical devices (industrial automation systems, household appliances) or inductive components (electromechanical relays) by means of signals from noise-sensitive programmable systems (in practice, these are usually microcontrollers). Analogue optocouplers can also be used to transmit information from simple sensors (e.g. thermocouples), with safe circuit separation ensured. The range of Lite-On transistor components comprises one-, two-, and four-channel systems, with isolation voltages up to 5 kV, as well as those operating in feedback systems whose features include, for example, line signal compensation. They are suitable for voltages (collector-emitter line) ranging from 20 V to 300 V. This product range also features components designed using the Darlington configuration and HighSpeed versions designed to separate communication lines, e.g. for RS-232 serial interfaces.
Optocouplers with digital outputs are used in applications similar to those described above, but operating different system types, e.g. low-power IGBT or MOSFET transistors (frequently manufactured as modular assemblies). With their use, a precise (and miniature) controller circuit can control power supply for very high loads, e.g. brushless motors or charger units in energy storage facilities (PV systems). Short actuation time (which can get as short as 21 ns) is another strong point of such components.
As their name suggests, optotriacs are components “related” to triacs and used to control AC flow, which in practice boils down to controlling equipment supplied directly from the mains, e.g. heaters, fans, light sources, motors, etc. All Lite-On products included in this group come with AC voltages up to 400 V (even 800 V in selected models), and some of them are equipped with zero-crossing circuits. Therefore, they do not get activated until a phase line potential is equal to the neutral line potential, which ensures low noise levels and a long lifecycle of the receiver.
