Electromagnetic relays control electrical circuits with the use of the force called electromagnetism. At the heart of the relay there is the coil, which generates a magnetic field as a result of the current flowing through it. This field affects the relay contacts, which can change their position to open or close the circuit. Electromagnetic relays are used in a wide variety of applications. They can be found in devices used on a daily basis, as well as in factories, where they are installed as components of industrial automation.
OMRON Electronic Components, a brand owned by a Japanese industry giant Omron, is one of the main manufacturers of electromagnetic relays, as well as other electronic components. This time, we will focus on two series of miniature relays that are available in the TME catalogue.
OMRON Electronic Components miniature relays
The TME catalogue includes the G5PZ and G6DN series of miniature electromagnetic relays. These families are similar to one another mainly because of their compact size and contact configuration, in both cases SPST-NO, and because of the way they are mounted on a printed circuit board (THT). However, despite the similarities, the G5PZ and G6DN relays differ in terms of electrical parameters.

In the G5PZ components, the coil is supplied with 5 V, 12 V, 18 V or 24 V DC, while the maximum contact load is 16 A or 20 A at 250 V AC. The switching voltage of the contacts is described as 250 V AC and 400 V DC. In addition, the relays are characterised by an actuation time of 15 ms and mechanical durability of up to two million switching operations. It is also worth mentioning the coil current, which depends on the model and ranges from 22.1 mA to 106 mA. The temperature at which these components can operate is also dependent on the specific model. The ranges that can be found in the manufacturer’s documentation are: -40°C‒70°C and -40°C‒85°C.
The G6DN relays have a slightly lower load rating. The contacts of these components withstand a current of 5 A at 250 V AC. The coil is supplied with 4.5 V, 5 V, 12 V or 24 V DC, and the current flowing through it ranges from 4.6 mA to 36 mA. As a result, the components have a low power consumption of 110 mW. We can also find differences in the switching voltage, the maximum values of which are 125 V DC and 277 V AC. In addition, these relays respond to the switching signal in 15 ms and have the mechanical durability of two million switching operations. It is also worth noting the interesting feature of the G6DN series relays, which is their small size (20 mm x 5 mm x 12.5 mm) ‒ they are only 5 mm wide, so they can be mounted in miniature electronic circuits. In addition, the G6DN-1A-CF models are resistant to high temperatures and can operate in environments where the temperature ranges between -40°C and 105°C. Thanks to that, they will be perfect for demanding industrial applications.
The OMRON range of products is, of course, much wider, and the company is one of the leaders in the production of sensors and control systems. The TME catalogue includes, among other things, contactors, switches and microswitches, switch-mode power supplies or HMI panels ‒ all from this manufacturer. As for the OMRON Electronic Components, the catalogue features a wide range of sensors and electromagnetic and solid-state relays. All of them are characterised by high quality of workmanship and reliability, thanks to which the products have gained the recognition of specialists from all around the world.
