India’s gaming industry is entering a more mature phase, with the market crossing the $1 billion mark in 2025 and the country expected to have more than 550 million gamers in 2026. At the same time, India’s gaming ecosystem is expanding, with esports, PC and console gaming, and a growing creator and game-development economy adding new dimensions to the market.

That shift is also seeing gaming creators become increasingly mainstream, with gaming and esports personalities expanding their presence beyond the traditional gaming ecosystem and into wider entertainment and culture. As gaming continues to reach new audiences, storage is becoming a more important part of the gaming experience, and the SANDISK OptimusTM portfolio arrives as gamers look for performance and reliability.

1. Sandisk has given its gaming SSD portfolio a new identity

Introduced in 2026, as the new name for its renowned internal SSD lineup, SANDISK Optimus™ SSDs bring together three tiers, with SANDISK Optimus™ GX SSD specifically positioned for gamers and SANDISK Optimus™ GX PRO SSD aimed at developers, professionals, and gamers who are looking to build AI PCs, workstations, or high-end PC.

For Indian gamers, the timing is notable. As gaming moves further into the mainstream, storage is no longer simply a supporting component inside a gaming PC. Fast and reliable drives can enhance loading, game installation, file transfers and overall system responsiveness, making NVMeTM SSD performance more apparent to end user.

2. Game sizes are making additional storage a necessity, not an accessory

Modern games are becoming larger and more demanding, while gamers are simultaneously building extensive digital libraries across multiple games and spanning a wide range of games. That changes the role of storage inside a gaming setup. A drive that fills quickly may force users to constantly uninstall, reinstall or move games, creating friction that faster processors or graphics cards cannot solve.

This is where capacity becomes part of the performance conversation. SANDISK Optimus™ portfolio is designed to deliver speed and capacity, giving gamers more room for expansive game libraries and demanding content workflows.

3. Faster SSDs are bringing storage into the performance conversation

Gaming hardware discussions have traditionally revolved around GPUs, CPUs and RAM. SSDs, however, are an integral part of the performance equation [1]as developers build experiences around faster storage. SANDISK Optimus™ GX PRO 8100, a PCIe® 5.0 NVMe™ SSD, for example, offers high-performance Sequential Read/Write speeds of up to 14,900/14,000 MB/s* (2TB** and 4TB** models).  For gamers, this reduces friction across loading, multitasking and large file movement.

4. Handheld Gaming Consoles are creating another storage opportunity

The storage conversation is not limited to PC gaming. Console gaming is also creating new requirements as game downloads become larger and digital libraries expand. Sandisk has introduced SANDISK microSDTM Express cards for handheld gaming consoles with read speeds of up to 880MB/s* and capacities reaching 1TB**. The 1TB** card can accommodate up to 36 games***, while its ThermAdapt™ technology helps keep card temperatures within operating limits during use.

This illustrates a wider trend: across gaming platforms, storage is becoming an increasingly important part of the user experience rather than an afterthought.

5. Faster storage matters beyond loading games

Gaming today also involves streaming, recording, editing clips, downloading large updates and managing increasingly heavy content libraries. The rise of gaming creators in India makes this particularly relevant.

The recent mainstream visibility of creators shows how gaming personalities are increasingly becoming entertainment brands in their own right. For these users, a gaming system is also a content-production system, making fast storage useful for moving recordings, editing footage and handling large media files alongside games.

6. Indian gamers may be entering a storage-first upgrade cycle

India’s gaming audience is expanding rapidly, but the bigger story is how the nature of that audience is changing. [2]With the market crossing $1 billion and the number of players expected to surpass 550 million in 2026, gaming is becoming a larger mainstream entertainment category.

As more consumers move toward dedicated PCs, consoles, esports and creator-led gaming, hardware priorities are likely to evolve with them. SANDISK Optimus™ product range positions storage as one of those priorities, combining higher capacities with performance aimed at gamers and other demanding users. The next phase of India’s gaming growth may therefore not be defined only by more players, but by better-equipped players.

Gaming is becoming more mainstream, more diverse and increasingly connected to the creator economy. As game libraries grow and gamers demand faster, smoother and more capable systems, storage is moving from the background to the centre of the conversation. With the SANDISK Optimus™ portfolio, Sandisk is positioning itself for that shift, making SSD capacity and performance a more visible part of how Indian gamers build their next-generation setups.

*1GB = 1 billion bytes and 1TB = 1 trillion bytes. Actual user capacity may be less depending on operating environment.

**1MB/s = 1 million bytes per second. IOPS = input/output operations per second. Based on internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device, usage conditions, drive capacity, and other factors.

*** Approximations; results may vary based on host device, file attributes and other factors. For Games: Based on an average game size of 25GB each.
