In the era of mobile internet and the trend of the Internet of Everything, data centers have become a crucial pillar of the 5G communications industry due to the explosive growth of data. High-speed computing and processing of ultra-large data require chips such as FPGAs and ASICs, which in turn demand higher requirements for their power supplies. How to choose suitable and reliable DC/DC converters (PoL power supplies) placed near LSIs (such as microprocessors, DSPs, FPGAs, ASICs)? In this text, we will explore how to make this selection.
K(D)12(M)T series complies with the requirements for PoL power supplies
Chips have high current requirements at high-speed operation. When the chip is operating at peak current, the closer the compact PoL power product is to the load, the smaller the resistive voltage drops caused by PCB trace and the less interference from parasitic parameters on backend devices.
When chips, such as FPGAs and CPUs, transition from a dormant state to high-load operation, their power supply’s output current undergoes a significant change, resulting in a high di/dt state. A significant change in output current can cause fluctuations in the output voltage. If not recovered quickly, chips will respond more slowly or may even fail. So, the power supply should feature a better dynamic load response.
Due to the varying input voltage requirements of these chip loads, a PoL power supply with an ultra-wide input range can be compatible with various chip needs, reducing the application and management of multiple PoL power supplies. Furthermore, consideration should be given to system maintenance and upgrades, where if the packaging of the PoL power supply complies with international standards, it can provide more convenience for replacement and repair.
The MORNSUN K(D)12(M)T series is a small-sized PoL power supply with high output accuracy and a load capacity of 6A/12A/16A/20A/40A/60A/100A. The output voltage can be precisely adjusted within the range of 0.6-5.5V to meet specific requirements as above described.
Features:
- High transient response, high output voltage accuracy
Mornsun PoL power supply has a high transient response speed. K12MT has ±1% high output voltage accuracy and KD12T has as low as 2mV output voltage deviation. It can meet the stable voltage output under various working conditions.
- Compact size
Increasing power integration and miniaturization is an inevitable trend of power supply. The K12MT series is ultra-compact, measuring only 12.2 x 12.2mm, and integrates all passive components required for a complete DC/DC power supply solution. This significantly helps to save design space and improve system board utilization.
- DOSA & PoLA Compliance
These non-isolated DC/DC converters have been designed to meet industry-standard footprint and pinout specifications, such as DOSA and PoLA. This allows designers to modify PoL power requirements without the need for PCB redesign. Furthermore, sidewall copper has been added to facilitate customer soldering.
- Wide output voltage range adjustable
The output voltage can be precisely adjusted between 0.6-5.5V, making it suitable for use in a variety of distributed power supply systems (i.e. 0.6/1.2/1.8/2.5/3.3/5V), including ASIC, FPGA, DSP, CPU/GPU, and RAM.
Selection Tips for Mornsun PoL Power Supply
- Normal Telecom applications: K12MT series
In general communication devices, such as PoE and BBUs, there is a high requirement for the size, compatibility, accuracy, and other characteristics of the Point-of-Load (PoL) power supplies that provide power to the loads. K12MT series is the ideal choice for these applications.
- Large Data Computing Applications: KD12T series
Compared to general communication equipment, cloud computing, data centers, and other applications with large data computing needs, the power supply (PoL power) for their high-performance chips has two specific requirements when operating at low input voltage:
1. Higher current demand. The current supplied to the CPU is directly proportional to its processor speed. For example, an i7 processor requires a power supply current of approximately 75A.
2. More large load fluctuation (faster load transient response).
The MORNSUN PoL DC/DC power supply KD12T series is the ideal choice for these applications. This series features:
- Ultra- Large Output Current: 40-100A
Mornsun PoL power supply modules KD12T series are available in 40A, 60A, and 100A. And the KD12T-40A/ KD12T-60A can be connected in parallel to achieve up to 80A/120A output current.
- High-speed load transient response
The KD12T series features an ultra-high transient response speed. For example, the 40A product (KD12T-40A) has a dynamic (typ) of ±18mV and a ripple (typ) of 4mVp-p and at Vo=0.6V. (As shown in the datasheet below)
Furthermore, as technology advances and the demand for active power management increases, PoL power supplies with PMBus technology are gaining popularity.
The KD12T series with PMBus digital communication protocol allows users to monitor the operating status and product condition in real-time, as well as adjust the internal parameters through the upper computer, reducing the complexity of the user’s operation and improving convenience.
Practical Case: WDM Device
In the field of communications, the bearer network can be used to transmit a variety of voice and data. The PoL power supply required by the WDM device inside the OTN (Optical Transport Network), which is a common equipment of the bearer network, typically has an output current of 3~60A and an output voltage of 0.6-5.5V. For PoL power supplies with an output of 40A or more, there is a growing requirement for the PMBUS function.
Here is a recommended power supply solution for WDM devices: the KD12T-40A (as shown in the picture below). It has a wide input voltage range of 4.5-14.4V and an adjustable output voltage of 0.6-4.5V. The PoL power supply has a high output accuracy of ±2mV, a low ripple of 4mV, and a low transient response deviation of 18mV. Its efficiency is up to 95%.
Additional features include the ability to configure and monitor using PMBus, PGOOD, remote compensation, clock synchronization, parallel connection support, and current sharing.
