The “Dbacks Avnet STEM Scholars” program celebrated its second year, awarding surprise scholarships to seven deserving students. Avnet and the Arizona Diamondbacks committed $1 million dollars in college scholarships to the program through St. Vincent de Paul. Students not only receive a four-year scholarship, they are also showered with gifts, including a laptop, a $500 gift card, a backpack, headphones and a custom jersey.
This year’s group of scholars was honored at a surprise ceremony at Chase Field on May 18, which included the opportunity to be recognized on the field before the game.
“I couldn’t be more proud of the Avnet STEM Scholars,” shared Phil Gallagher, CEO of Avnet. “These young students have tremendous grit and tenacity – I am certain they will succeed and we are honored to be a part of their journey.”
All of the scholars are high-potential, first-generation Arizona students. The in-depth program through St. Vincent de Paul pairs the students with mentors and support to help them on their journey and ensure their success. The program has been assisting scholars for more than 20 years.
Many of the scholars will be attending Arizona State University, with majors that include nursing, mechanical engineering, biomedical science and civil engineering. One of the scholars, who is 28 years old, came to Arizona a few years ago as an orphan from Mexico. He recently finished two years of study at Phoenix College and will continue his education at Paradise Valley Community College to obtain a 4-year degree in Accounting.
The scholars from 2023 are also working hard and thriving. One of the scholars is majoring in Animation at Arizona State, maintaining a 4.0 GPA and Dean’s List recognition. She is currently an intern with St. Vincent de Paul in their marketing department and is very active volunteering with St. Vincent de Paul and with her faith community.
