Harwin has extended its Kontrol lineup of connectors for industrial and embedded applications, adding through hole retention to further enhance resilience and board-level reliability in harsh operational environments. 72 new products have been added to the industrial connector family, extending the range by 48%.

These industrial environments are evolving rapidly, with applications and modern equipment needing to tolerate higher levels of vibration and allow increased data throughput while being afforded less space.

The launch of these Through Hole Retention Kontrol connectors follows a trend from Harwin to bring features originally developed for advanced high-reliability products to the Kontrol range in order to address these market forces.

Tests show through hole retention offers up to twice the PCB retention force of surface mount retention options. The Through Hole Retention Kontrol series is rated for up to 500 matings and has a vibration tolerance of 20 G for up to 12 hours.

Like other Kontrol connectors, these devices feature a 1.27 (0.05″) pitch and are available in nine pin variants from 6+6 to 40+40 layouts, and both vertical and horizontal options for space-constrained environments.

Similarly, the devices are fully shrouded with recessed contacts to protect against damage and are polarized to allow assembly in one direction only to assist in blind mating. The connectors also feature location pegs to ensure correct board placement and inhibit movement while soldering.

The range’s tolerance to misalignment remains high, with an allowable linear misalignment of between 2o and 4o+/- 1o depending on the connector.

“Industrial and embedded applications typically suffer tight cost constraints, but are now facing exceptionally harsh environments,” said John Feaster, Product Manager BBi Connectors at Harwin. “Harwin and its HRi ranges are an industry leader for resilience and durability, and we’re delighted to bring these features to industrial environments.”

Harwin’s Through Hole Retention Kontrol connectors are available immediately, including in tape and reel packaging for automated assembly processes. They are free from lead, brominated flame retardants, red phosphor (PFOS/PFOA) and antimony, and are fully RoHS Compatible and contain no REACH SVHCs.
